The latest in the wide world of board games is called "Energy
Empire", a didactic game that teaches players about the world of
renewable energy while having fun.
Designed by three young graduates interested in scientific
communication, "Energy Empire" was devised as the final stage of a
Master's Degree programme on renewable energy and organised as part
of the project - T.E.R.S.O (Talent, Energy, Research, Development,
Organization) - in which AREA Science Park had a major role.
Financed by the Foundation for the South of Italy as part of a
series of projects to develop outstanding human capital, fifteen
graduates resident in the region of Sardinia completed the
T.E.R.S.O. Master's Degree. Their aim is to stem the brain drain
and to promote the creation of companies and membership in local
organisations.
Plenty of curiosity, a pinch of scientific expertise and a
minimum age of twelve are all you need to play "Energy Empire", a
game that highlights the positive aspects of sustainable energy and
underscores problems relating to their diffusion and use.The object
of the game is to gradually replace the energy produced by fossil
fuels with the energy generated by renewable sources, while being
careful to respect the constraints and conditions dictated by the
European Union.
The game can be played by two to five players. The winner is the
person who achieves total energy sustainability or the last person
left in the game.A cross between Monopoly and Trivial Pursuit,
"Energy Empire" has a board showing Europe divided into five
nations.
Pieces of different shapes and sizes, Renewability, Research and
Question cards and a twelve-sided dice are also part of the
game. One hundred copies of the game have so far been made as
prototypes, thanks to the contribution of AREA.
